Some of what you'll be doing:
As a Senior Port Counsel, you will have the opportunity to make a positive, immediate, and lasting impact by providing high quality legal support to assist the Port of Seattle in carrying out its business and meeting its strategic goals. This includes advising clients at all levels of the organization and managing litigation.
- You will strategize with client teams to offer options to satisfy the Port's legal responsibilities while furthering policy goals.
- You will provide legal services to the Port on a variety of employment, labor, personal injury, and Public Records Act issues. The employment and labor practice covers a wide array of issues such as representing and advising on ADA, FMLA, Title VII and WLAD issues, Labor and Industries matters, the Equal Pay Act, Workplace Responsibility investigations, discipline matters, collective bargaining agreements, grievances, arbitrations, and unfair labor practice issues.
- You will retain and manage outside counsel to represent the Port in employment, labor, personal injury, and Public Records Act litigation and other proceedings such as administrative hearings, grievances, and arbitrations.
- You will advise and assist the Port in responding to Public Records Act requests and discovery.
- You will advise on insurance coverage and contractual defense and indemnity obligations.
- You will draft, review, and negotiate agreements such as settlement agreements, collective bargaining agreements, union memoranda of understanding, and intergovernmental or interlocal agreements.
- You will advise on questions concerning the Port's authority under state law, Port Commission enactments, and Port rules and regulations.
- You will advise on a variety of general municipal law issues such as the Open Public Meetings Act, the Interlocal Cooperation Act, and constitutional law.
- You may be assigned additional or different duties or practice areas by the General Counsel as needed.
Who you are:
- Experienced – You have five (5) years of experience representing government, private, or in-house clients on employment and labor law issues and in litigation.
- Educated – You possess a Juris Doctor degree and Washington State Bar admission.
- Desired – We hope you have eight (8) or more years of experience representing government, private, or in-house clients on employment and labor law issues and in litigation. We also hope you have experience with some or all the following:Personal injury litigation
Public Records Act and other municipal law issues
Project labor agreements and labor harmony agreements
State and federal regulatory regimes

What else you need to know:
- Work Schedule – Your normal work schedule will be Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (40 hours per week). Slightly more flexible start and end times are available in this role. At times, you may be asked to be available for earlier or later hours or on some weekends.
- Work Environment – This work will take place in a hybrid remote/in-office setting that can be adjusted at management’s discretion.
- Washington State Residency Requirement – Employees must establish a residence in Washington state within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle. If a position is eligible to telework, work performed while teleworking generally must be performed in Washington State.
- COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement – Effective, November 15, 2021, the Port of Seattle will require that at the time of hire, and as a condition of employment, the successful candidate will be able to provide proof of their full COVID-19 vaccination status, as part of the hiring process. This is a condition of employment for all positions at the Port of Seattle. People are considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose in a two-dose series or two weeks after a single-dose vaccine.
