Deputy Prosecuting Attorney

The Criminal Division of the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office is looking for several experienced, highly motivated attorneys to join our office as Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys (DPA).

KCPAO deputies cover work at courthouses in Seattle, Kent, and Redmond.  All deputies are expected to be able to work at any of those locations.  The courts are currently allowing virtual appearances for some calendars due to COVID-19, but in-person appearances will be necessary for
hearings as well as for jury trials, Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours.  Employees must reside in WA state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.

Please note that when an employee conducts work that is likely to bring them in contact with another individual, safety precautions are required by the department in alignment with the Public Health Directive from the Seattle & King County Public Health Officer.

Job Duties

This is NOT an entry level position.  (If you are a new attorney or an attorney with very little experience handling criminal cases, please see our job posting for Assistant Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys instead.) This is a regular, full-time Deputy Prosecuting Attorney position for attorneys with experience handling a felony criminal caseload. DPAs will be assigned to work in Seattle or Kent handling a felony case load in any of the PAO’s Criminal Division units such as the General Crimes Unit including its Collaborative Justice Team, the Involuntary Treatment Act Unit, Violent and Economic Crimes Unit, the Domestic Violence Unit, and the Special Assault Unit.   Potential work assignments include filing felony cases, negotiating felony cases, covering felony criminal calendars, trial work, and liaison work.

There is a probationary period of six months that may be extended for an additional six months.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

  • Strong legal research, writing and analytical skills.
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to working effectively in a team environment.
  • Strong commitment to Equity, Social and Justice issues including working on personal cultural competency.
  • 3 - 10+ years handling a criminal case load to include felony cases.
  • Must be Washington State Bar qualified.
